The Rialto Bridge

The Rialto is the oldest of the bridges across the Grand Canal. It became stone in 1591; before that wooden bridges stood here, and they collapsed three times, once under the weight of a crowd.

The bridge rests on a single great arch and on twelve thousand piles driven into the bed. People at the time did not believe such a structure would hold — it has held for four centuries. Two rows of shops run along the middle, and terraces at each end look out over the whole bend of the canal.
