The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is Venice’s main street, only with water instead of asphalt. It winds through the whole city in an S for almost four kilometres and is only about five metres deep.

More than a hundred palaces line it, and nearly every one has its front door on the water: guests arrived by boat, not from the street. Only four bridges cross the canal — elsewhere traditional traghetto boats ferry people over. The cheapest way to ride its full length is the vaporetto, the water bus.
