Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral took almost six hundred years to build — from 1386 into the twentieth century. It is the largest church in Italy after St Peter’s and one of the largest in the world: forty thousand people fit inside.

Outside it bristles with spires — a hundred and thirty-five of them, each carrying a statue. There are more than three thousand statues in all. You can go up onto the roof and walk between the spires: it is a rare Gothic cathedral that lets you stroll across the top. On the highest spire stands the golden Madonnina, the city’s protector.
