An Egyptian obelisk more than three thousand years old stands at the centre: it was brought from Heliopolis under Augustus and first stood on the spina of the Circus Maximus. On the south side are two twin churches; they look identical, but look at the domes — one is round, the other oval. The architect had to cheat, because the plots were of different widths.
