In the middle stands Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. The four marble figures are the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata — one river for each part of the world known at the time. The Nile has its head covered with cloth: back then nobody knew where the river began. Find the palm, the lion and the armadillo around the base — the sculptor added animals from those same distant lands.
