The Column of Marcus Aurelius

The Column of Marcus Aurelius stands on Piazza Colonna and repeats the idea of Trajan’s Column: a spiral relief telling of the emperor’s campaigns. It was built almost a century later, and the difference shows.

The figures here are larger and cut deeper — the carvers had worked out that fine detail is lost from the ground, and began carving for viewing from a distance. Compare it with Trajan’s Column if you see both: it is a rare chance to watch a craft change with your own eyes.
