The marble by Bernini is the heart of it. In Apollo and Daphne the girl’s fingers are turning into branches before your eyes and bark is creeping up her leg; in The Rape of Proserpina Pluto’s fingers press into a marble thigh as if the stone were soft. Walk right round both: they are made for a moving viewer, and the scene changes from every side.
