The Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the end of an ancient aqueduct built under Augustus and named Aqua Virgo. The story goes that a girl showed the spring to Roman soldiers, which is where the name comes from.

At the centre Oceanus rides a shell chariot pulled by two sea horses. Look closely: one horse is calm, the other rears up. That is the sea in a calm and in a storm, the same water in two moods. You throw a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder — then you come back to Rome, they say.
