The pharaohs of Egypt

The Louvre’s Egyptian collection is one of the world’s largest: over fifty thousand objects, from stone statues of pharaohs to combs and children’s toys.

Here you will find the Great Sphinx of Tanis, the Seated Scribe with eyes of rock crystal, and bronze cats — in Egypt the cat was the goddess Bastet. Look for cartouches in the cases: an oval frame round hieroglyphs meant a royal name. Once a child spots a cartouche, they know at once they are looking at a name and not a pattern.
